Classical Hatha Yoga (Hath Yog) was designed to control the six senses, the body, and the mind, with the aim of eventually controlling the ego in order to reach enlightenment. The word Hatha means "stubborn?; in Hatha Yoga, the body unthinkingly, and stubbornly, assumes a series of postures without any involvement of the mind. A practitioner of Hatha Yoga works constantly to achieve a quiet mind. Classical Hatha Yoga is over 2000 years old.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Flow is a more contemporary form of yoga developed in the 20th century. Like Hatha Yoga, strict emphasis is placed on correct breathing; however, there is a greater focus on muscle development and strength in Ashtanga Vinyasa Flow. It has a much faster pace than Classical Hatha Yoga.
